Board of Directors

Matthew K. Fust

Matthew Fust has served as a member of our board of directors since 2005. Mr. Fust is the Chief Financial Officer of Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Inc. From 2003 to 2008 he was Chief Financial Officer of Jazz Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and from May 2002 to May 2003 Mr. Fust was Chief Financial Officer at Perlegen Sciences, Inc., a biotechnology company. From June 1996 to January 2002, he was an executive with ALZA Corporation, first as Controller and then as Chief Financial Officer. Mr. Fust holds a B.A. in Accounting from the University of Minnesota and an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Ed Hurwitz

Ed Hurwitz has served as a member of our board of directors since April 2009. Mr. Hurwitz has served as a director of Alta Partners since June 2002. From June 1997 to October 2002, Mr. Hurwitz served as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Affymetrix, Inc., a microarray technology company. From April 1994 to June 1997, Mr. Hurwitz was a biotechnology research analyst for Robertson Stephens & Company, and from April 1992 to April 1994, was a biotechnology research analyst for Smith Barney Shearson. From November 1990 to April 1992, Mr. Hurwitz practiced commercial law at Cooley Godward LLP. Mr. Hurwitz holds a B.A. in Molecular Biology from Cornell University, a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley's Boalt School of Law and an M.B.A. from the Haas School of Business.

Dayton Misfeldt

Dayton Misfeldt has served as a member of our board of directors since April 2009. Mr. Misfeldt is an Investment Partner at Bay City Capital LLC and focuses on biopharmaceutical investment opportunities. Prior to joining Bay City Capital in May 2000, Mr. Misfeldt was a Vice President at Roth Capital Partners where he worked as a sell-side analyst covering the biopharmaceutical industry. Mr. Misfeldt has also worked as a Project Manager at Life Science Economics. Mr. Misfeldt received a B.A. in Economics from the University of California, San Diego.

Homer L. Pearce, Ph.D.

Dr. Pearce has served as a member of our board of directors since June 2006. Dr. Pearce served in various capacities at Eli Lilly & Company since joining the company in 1979, including Vice President, Cancer Research and Clinical Investigation from 1994 to 2002 and Fellow, Cancer Research, Lilly Research Laboratories from 2002 to March 2006. Since August 2006, Dr. Pearce has served as a consultant to our company. He is a member of the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He received a B.S. from Texas A&M University and his Ph.D. from Harvard University.

David C. Stump, M.D.

Dr. Stump has served as a member of our board of directors since June 2006. He is Executive Vice President, Research and Development at Human Genome Sciences, Inc., and has served at the company since November 1999. Prior to joining Human Genome Sciences, Dr. Stump held roles of increasing responsibility at Genentech, Inc., from 1989 to 1999, most recently as Vice President, Clinical Research and Genentech Fellow. Prior to joining Genentech, Dr. Stump was an Associate Professor of Medicine and Biochemistry at the University of Vermont. Since September 2006, Dr. Stump has served as a consultant to our company. He earned an A.B. from Earlham College and an M.D. at Indiana University, followed by residency and fellowship training in internal medicine, hematology, oncology and biochemistry at the University of Iowa.

Daniel N. Swisher, Jr.

Since December 2003, Daniel N. Swisher, Jr. has served as Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Sunesis Board of Directors, and as our President since August 2005. Mr. Swisher joined the company in 2001 and he served as Chief Business Officer and Chief Financial Officer until 2003. Prior to joining Sunesis, Mr. Swisher served in various management roles, including Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for ALZA Corporation from 1992 to 2001. Mr. Swisher joined the board of the Okizu Foundation in 2007, an organization that provides support to families affected by childhood cancers. Mr. Swisher holds a B.A. in History from Yale University and an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

James W. Young, Ph.D.

Since April 2009, James W. Young, Ph.D. has been non-executive Chairman of our board of directors. From 2000 until April 2009 Dr Young served as Executive Chairman. Dr. Young was the Chief Executive Officer of Sunesis from May 2000 until November 2003. In April 2006, Dr. Young joined 5AM Ventures, a venture capital firm, as a venture partner. Prior to joining Sunesis, Dr. Young served as Vice President for Research; Senior Vice President, Research and Development; and Group Vice President at ALZA Corporation from 1995 to 2000. From 1992 to 1995, Dr. Young served as Senior Vice President for Business Development and as President of the Pharmaceuticals Division of Affymax, N.V. From 1987 to 1992, he served as Senior Vice President for Business Development and as Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Pharmaceuticals Division at Sepracor Inc. Dr. Young holds a B.S. in Chemistry from Fordham University and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Cornell University.
